Fishing Report
How's Fishing? We've had a good week of fishing. I was able to make it down on Monday and fished a couple different ways. I threw a sink tip with an olive crackleback and did pretty well. Of course, I threw the cream mop fly and did awesome fishing up at the spillway. Love the fly or hate it, that cream mop fly catches fish! When the mop turned off I threw a John Deere Mini jig and did well. I have tried a dry fly a couple times this week and it just wasn't happening for me. I had a couple of misses on top but it was kind of slow. The water right now is pretty clear and flowing at a normal rate. The last time we had rain was several days ago, the spring is clearing up very nice. We have had a lot of pollen flying out of the trees and covering the stream but when I was down this morning it was fine.
So what's been working? In zone 1 and 2 several anglers were doing well today with Kapok under a split shot. Other anglers were doing well with different colors of glo balls like tri original, pink, Jimi Hendrix, white and light roe with a red dot. I spoke with several anglers using and doing good with a John Deere Mini Jig. Another mini jig working well was the green goblin thread jig which is just a lime green thread jig. Of course, several anglers were doing great with several different Rooster Tails like brown, Rainbow Tensile., brown trout tensile and also the white. In zone three lots of anglers are using Berkley Power Eggs and drifting under a split shot.
Last week we had the Jared Burke Foundation here at Bennett Spring. The foundation has been bringing veterans to Bennett Spring for a fishing outing for the past several years. The Jared Burke foundation was started by John Burke after his brother Jared tragically lost his life in a hunting accident. Since then, the foundation provides hunter education to kids and adults. They also provide hunting trips and outings to the underprivileged and veterans. Every year the foundation purchases several rods for the veterans. This year with the help of Matt Borovy with Cortland Line Company and Jeff Trigg with Redington-we were able to get 4 rods donated to the Veterans. There is so much that goes into these outings and wouldn't be successful without the sponsors and volunteers. Big thanks to Pat Rigby with the Missouri Department of Conservation for assisting me with giving fly rod lessons. It's a wonderful event and Weaver's is proud to be part of it.
I hope everyone has an awesome weekend and gets to make it down soon for some fishing. Good luck, be safe and well see you on the stream.
