Fishing Report

How’s fishing?  What a great couple weeks of fishing we've had here at Bennett Spring! The leaves are starting to change and fall is drawing near. It’s crazy to thing how fast this season has went by. So how has fishing been? Well I believe with the anglers I've spoke with - the consensus is that it’s been great.  Several nice fish have been caught. Now with the hatchery project some my differ but a large majority are having some good fishing.  So what’s working? Dry flies have been very popular- renegades, Caddis, stimulators, Quill Gordon’s have worked the best for me. I've fished the Niangua quite a bit- with dries and been very successful. At the Spring in Zone 1 near the old island  up from the dam has also been a favorite spot for me. Stripping cracklebacks has also been pretty great too with Bennett blue and olive. My father in law Randy and mother in-law Cheryl did pretty good over a  week ago in zone 3 catching and releasing several nice trout. One angler  came up to the store and seen them down by the wooden bridge  and said he watched them for a while and said "I bet they have caught over 100 fish."  They were using salmon peach PowerBait and Sherbet PowerBait.  For other anglers- worms and salmon eggs have also worked great in zone 3.

In zone1 and 2, drifting little thread jigs in white and also the "green gobblin" which is a  chartreus thread jig.
I got to fish last week with my two buddies, Jeff Arns and Jason Mullins in the River and also at Bennett. We caught some nice trout! I must also mention that I caught and released  a nice 2 pounder with the RGN "Ross Glitter Nymph" golden olive. The little nymph works really well and I cant say enough about it.
This past Monday I had the opportunity to take my new friend Matthew Jobe out on the stream. It was his first time with a fly rod and he got it done! The fishing was a little slower but we managed to catch some nice fish. We  started out using cream mops, white thread jigs and John Deere Mini jigs under an indicator with some success. We switched to dry flies and managed to pick a few off the top. We then fished near the dam with cracklebacks and caught a few nice rainbow. All around it was a great day of fishing.
We have a couple more events for the season including the 100th year Bennett Celebration, women’s free fishing day and the Holland Derby. I will post the dates at the bottom of then report.
I hope everyone has a great weekend. Good luck, be safe and we’ll see you on the stream!
