Fishing Report

How’s Fishing?  Hello anglers and welcome back to the fishing report. Sorry it’s been a couple of weeks since my last report. We’ve had a great couple of weeks of fishing here at Bennett Spring and in the Niangua River. I have been down several times to fish the past couple of weeks and caught some real nice trout in the spring and the Niangua River. I have been trying to not just focus on one technique of fishing and have switch it up quite a bit, fishing with a sink tip and also doing some drifting with an indicator and playing with a dry on top. Now I would have to say that stripping a crackleback is probably my all-time favorite, though I’ve noticed that on some days the drift has been better especially with smaller midges and nymphs. Black or red zebra midges below an indicator or a dropper. And yes, since I mentioned it, a dropper in Missouri is in fact “legal.”  It’s a great technique where you suspend a midge or nymph or even a mini jig from a hopper, foam beetle or even a dry fly.  If you have fish that are consistently striking your indicator, a foam beetle with a suspended fly may work great for you

.

So what else is working? Well, I promise I am going to only mention this once, but the Cream Mop Fly has been on fire here lately.  I know, I know it’s a gut jig but if it catches fish, I’m going to use it.  Another couple of really good jigs have been the white thread, bed spread thread jig, John Deere Mini jig. Oh yeah- dry flies…. These have also been really fun. Beetles, Griffiths gnat, renegades, Quill Gordons and elk hair caddis have been great on top. Nothing better than watching a rainbow smack a dry on the surface of the water. Just don’t forget to set the hook when you see the splash.

The summer is drawing near and schools around the county are starting back up, So the crowds are changing a bit.  Still a lot of time for some good fishing here at Bennett and the Niangua River. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Good luck, be safe and I'll see you on the stream!
